How to tell when to Trim or Remove a Tree

It’s a wet and rainy South Florida morning and you watch as the wind and rain wreak havoc on your normally manicured yard. That pine tree (that was planted decades before you moved in) is now leaning over your brand new SUV. There are many signs that will indicate it’s time for you to consider removing a tree.

Here are a few of the warning signs to watch out for:

1. The tree is too close to a house, garage, sidewalk or street. - Trees can grow too low and get in the way of people and vehicles, sometimes causing dangerous situations. When too close to buildings, they can trap moisture and cast too much shade, causing moss, mold, and moisture damage. They also can act as a pathway for insects and small animals onto and into roofs and attics.
2. Dead bark or branches in the air or on the ground. - Like all living things, trees shed periodically. Some loss of bark and branches is normal. However, large patches of missing bark, a buildup of many dead branches, large dead or very thin looking parts of the crown, and hanging branches are all clear signs that the tree needs a visit from a professional.
3. Insect or disease activity is apparent. -There are many potential signs and symptoms of insect or disease activity to watch out for, such as:
   • Discolored leaves
   • Early leaf drop
   • Unusual growths on leaves
   • Holes in bark
   • Sawdust near the trunk
   • Fungi growing on stems
   • Large pieces of loose bark
   • Large, opaque webs in the tree
   • Sticky fluid dropping from leaves or stems
